The Hop Chronicles | Eureka, aka Experimental Pine Fruit
« on: August 20, 2015, 06:31:31 am »
Just published the first issue of The Hop Chronicles! For this one, we used a relatively new variety provided that was referred to as Experimental Pine Fruit and recently had a new name applied to it: Eureka. Check it out!

I've got some from YVH in my freezer. Can't wait to use them now. Sounds like it's nearly an IPA only hop, and a pretty good one at that.

I used ½# of this in a Brown Ale with Conan. I wasn't a huge fan but it was probably the malt clashing (Vienna, Munich, Caramunich). A few friends did enjoy it tho.

How would someone sensitive to Cat Pee aroma (like my wife) react to this one? Had Short's Sticky Icky Icky over the weekend, I thought it was "hoppy", she made a bad face.

Edit, this one.

"One taster commented it was like Simcoe on steroids..."

Count me out. I'm not a fan of Simcoe.

No one commented on cat pee being prominent at all, I didn't notice any either.

I certainly didn't perceive it this way, but it is similar.

I almost always do not pick it up, only if it is very high. How many women did you have taste the beers? They are more sensitive to 4MMP in general.

I believe 3/11 were women, one of which was Amanda B. at NHC.

So, does anyone have a good recommendation for a pairing hop for Eureka?

I have some citra, Galaxy, Columbus, EKG and mittelfreau on hand

If the "Simcoe on steroids" comment is any indication, I'd vote to use Galaxy with it. The tropical/passionfruit would be a nice balance.

Edit -  FWIW with a hop that strong, EKG and mittelfruh would get totally lost. Citra would work too, but I personally like the combo of Simcoe and Galaxy and I think it'd work better.

Nice, I was leaning towards either galaxy or citra

I'm gonna use a 35ibu 60 min magnum bittering charge and then use 1oz each of eureka and Galaxy at 5min and then 2oz each at flameout for a 30min whirlpool

Grain bill will be 60%2row and 40%munich (kickitatjim's APA recipe)

I tapped a keg of Eureka pale ale this weekend.

I get citrus (lemon, grapefruit), melon, light floral and light pine.  It has kind of a sharp bitterness; I think it might pair well with something something earthy.  The beer also tastes a bit minerally to me.

6 gallon batch

10 lbs. - 2 row
11.2 oz. - British medium crystal

.5 oz Eureka (18.5% AA) - 60 min
.25 oz. Eureka - 20 min
1 oz. Eureka - 10 min
1 oz. Eureka - 5 min
2 oz. Eureka - 0 min
2 oz. Eureka - Dry hop (3 days)

Wyeast 1272

OG: 1.054
FG: 1.012
