Koning Hoeven Dubbel

Does anyone know what yeast strain is in this beer? I tried it the other day and have been wondering ever since. Thinking about brewing some type of belgian beer know.

They make it sound like it's the same strain in all their beers, so you could probably culture it up from a bottle. The Blond might be easiest - although the White is lower-gravity, I wouldn't bank on it using the same strain without tasting first.
Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

Koningshoeven uses the same strain in all of their beers, except for the White (Witte Trappist)! Last time I checked the beers were not pasteurized, so you should be able to culture it from a bottle.
Who thinks knowledge is expensive, does not know how much stupidity costs.

If there is a character in the beer you like, check out "Brew Like a Monk" by Stan Hieronymus.  Great table in this book about the various Belgian yeast strains from both major liquid yeast companies, and the characters they produce at various fermentation temps.

Not much in the book about La Trappe/Konigshoeven.  An interesting side note is that Chimay once contracted with Konigshoeven to brew their white.  warning that this is complete speculation on my part, but could they be using the Chimay yeast?

You could also try culturing the yeast as others suggested, but if there is a specific character you are seeking, the conditions of fermentation can make a different beer with the same yeast.  Therefore, time spent with BLAM could be really helpful in this regard.

No, no. The yeast character of Koningshoeven is very different from that of Chimay. Koningshoeven uses two strains: one for the white (Witte Trappist) and one for their other beers.

To get that great dubbel flavor I think the secret ( for me anyhow) was the D2 syrup.

From what I've seen, if a Trappist brewery doesn't have its own yeast strain, they get it from another Trappist brewery.  Trappist breweries also supply many of the smaller local breweries in the area.  When I visited the area around Orval, just about every brewery I visited said they used Orval yeast.

Koningshoeven is owned by the Bavaria Brewery since a couple of years. Things have changed since then. Koningshoeven puts some new beers on the market regularly and I suspect them of using different strains for different (new) beers. With the Witte Trappist that is obvious: in this beer they use a Weizen strain.
