Wort on STBY!!
« on: April 27, 2016, 12:43:25 pm »
I currently have my wort all cool and comfortable awaiting its yeast starter.  My first starter was a total flop. My second started is off and running, but not yet ready....
Question:
How long can the wort wait for its partner without going bad?
Thanks!

Depends on your sanitation practices. I go overnight from time to time. I know some that have waited 24 hours.

...My second started is off and running...

Off and running sounds like a perfect time to pitch it. Many folks simply aim for "off and running" to pitch their starters (i.e. high krausen) regardless of estimated cell count.

Well...  it's only been 5 hours now since the starter got going...   What's the average time a starter is ready to go?

I believe Mark stated 8-12 hours from either pitch or signs of Kräusen
Frank L.
Fermenting: Nothing (ugh!)
Conditioning: Nothing (UGH!)
In keg: Nothing (Double UGH!)
In the works:  House IPA, Dark Mild, Ballantine Ale clone(still trying to work this one into the schedule)

I take this to mean (just for clarification), either:

a) 8-12 hours from pitching yeast into your starter wort, or
b) signs of krausen

...whichever comes first.

Would that be correct?

I made my second yeast starter as per advice and instructions. Glad I bought the yeast warranty !!  Both failed to launch.  I will admit the first starter was done incorrectly....  :(    "haste makes waste"  something my parents used to say...
So any how I could not bring myself to dump 5 gallons of wort.  I only have mail order for beer supplies.  So I had to resort to a local wine makers shop to pick up some unknown age dry yeast.  I am glad to see there is activity in the airlock!!!  No worries about sanitation...   well perhaps a bit...   It's in the hands of the Beer God!!!   Wish me luck!!!

Yeast Warranty? Nice...Could you recommend a brew lawyer?

Just a follow up....   I was able to salvage the batch after my 3rd attempt pitching yeast!   Proper sanitation pays off.

lots of times a starter ferments out and you don't even see it.
Are you sure you got 2 bad packs?  Look at the bottom and see if you got more slurry than when you pitched.   That is what counts, not foam on top or bubble activity.
