All Nugget IPA recipe help
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:01:46 pm »
This is a recipe that I found in a NB thread. I don't know much about recipe formulation but this seemed pretty safe and easy. However, it calls for 1# of Crystal 30L but my shop only had 40L. I am wondering if the 1# of 40L is appropriate? I also have 1# of 15L that I could substitute or mix with the 40L. The 2row, munich and vienna are already mixed but the crystals are separate.
I understand that Nugget is somewhat spicey and I wouldn't mind a little extra sweetness to offset this but I also like my IPA's fairly dry.
I am also interested in any opinions regarding the hop schedule.

A'la Nugget

The recipe looks good overall. I doubt you'll notice much difference between 30L and 40L. Even 20L and 40L, I sometimes have trouble. If you're worried about color you can just use 3/4 lb.

What's the target OG? With 15 lb of grain I'd be pushing 1.075. Pretty beefy IPA, but nothing wrong with that.

Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

I ended up mixing half 15/half 40. I was hoping to start at 1.069 based upon 70% eff.
I ended up at 1.062 and left a gallon of trub in the bk for a 63% eff. ugh.
Thanks.

I just pitched the yeast on a nugget pale ale. I used 6 0z. nuggets at 60 min. they are homegrown, so i have no idea what the AA's are. I also put in 3 oz. homegrown cascade at 20 and 2 oz. homegrown cascade at 5. I used 15 pounds 2 row and 1.5 crystal 60 plus 2 pounds sugar. I have no idea what this beer will turn out like, OG was 1.050. I would rather have over hopped than under. Bummer on your efficiency, post on how your IPA turns out. I will let you know how this turns out. Cheers! :) BTW this is a 12 gal. batch.
