Southern Italy (Catania, Sicily area)
« on: June 20, 2016, 10:23:16 am »
I will be moving to Southern Italy for a few years in a couple of months and I am just wondering if anybody here on the AHA forum has any recommendations on local micro-breweries and brewpubs. I know that the craft scene in Southern Italy has not advanced as much as its northern counterpart but there has been much improvement over the past 5 years or so. If you know of any LHBS retailers then that is definitely a plus. Thanks in advance!

I was stationed in Aviano (Northern Italy) '93-'97. Back then there was no beer scene. We drank wine and Peroni. Now, I think there is a better scene. However, I highly recommend learning to cook. Some of the best food in the world is in Italy.

I went to Catania once and the rental car was broken into. Great place. LOL

All of Europe is a passport and train ride away. Travel early and often!  Plenty of beer in Austria, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, France, etc.

I know Rome now has a Trappist brewery, Tre Fontane, wonderful Belgian Tripel.

And in Florence they have Archaea Brewery which had a fair number of good craft beers on tap.

Italy now has a burgeoning & extremely creative beer scene. The following are from ONE beer importer, B. United Intl. (disclosure - I work for Micro Man, a craft & import beer distributor in Florida and B. United is one of our suppliers). There are many other breweries not represented by B. United.

Apicoltura Dr.Pescia   Rosignano
Birra del Borgo   Borgorose
Birra del Carrobiolo   Monta
Birreria Le Baladin   Piozzo
Birrificio Almond 22   Pescara
Birrificio Barley   Maracalagonis (CA)
Birrificio Black Barrel   Torino
Birrificio Grado Plato   Chieri (TO)
Birrificio Italiano   Lurago Marinone (CO)
Birrificio Loverbeer   Marentino
Birrificio Montegioco   Montegioco (Al)
Birrificio Troll   Vernante (CN)
Birrificio del Ducato   Roncole Verdi Di Busseto (PR)
Birrificio di Como   Como
Extraomnes   Marnate
Piccolo Birrificio   Apricale (IM)
Selezione Baladin Srl   Piozzo

A couple of my favorites are Birra del Borgo, Le Baladin, Birrificio del Ducato, and Extraomnes.
