Geeking out a little...........? Party and MY BEER
« on: July 01, 2010, 10:15:03 AM »
Made up some descriptions (using different sources) for the three beers I am bringing to a party this weekend.

Started out three years ago, I brough a keg and my Aunt had to return a keg of beer that wasnt empty
Two years ago............ returned about half a keg.
Last year, they got a 1/4 barrel and I brought two corneys............. yup, returned half the 1/4 barrel.

This year we decided that I supply the beer (no problem, I love doing it anyway)

Classic American Lager
(AKA Pre-Prohibition American lager)

Pre-Prohibition American lagers differ significantly from modern  pale lagers (Budweiser, Molson, Stella Artois, Rolling Rock etc ) having higher flavor profiles than we expect from this style today.
Brewed with 20% corn and although still a very light lager has a fuller mouthfeel and higher bitterness being hopped to twice what you find in todays “fizzy yellow beers”
This is what American Lager used to taste like!

.........yes I can use the Fullers name  ;D

Fullers ESB

ESBs are essentially more aggressive and more balanced Bitters, both in alcohol and hop character, but nothing overpowering.
Color range will be similar, though leaning towards the darker end of the scale; dark golds to copper. Low carbonation.
Malts tend to be more pronounced, often toasty and fruit.

Despite "bitter" being in its name, ESBs are not really all that bitter. They key to an ESB is balance.

Bavarian Hefeweizen

A south German style of wheat beer (weissbier) made with a typical ratio of 50% Wheat and 50% Barley.

Much of the beers character comes from the yeast which produces phenolic flavors of banana and cloves with an often dry and tart edge, some spiciness, bubblegum or notes of apples.

Little hop bitterness, and a moderate level of alcohol.
The "Hefe" prefix means "with yeast", hence the beers unfiltered and cloudy appearance.

Too Geeky?
Not Geeky enough?
Anything you would change?
Jeff

On draught:
IIPA, Stout, Hefeweizen, Hallertau Pale Ale, Bitter

Primary:
Hefeweizen,Berliner Weisse, Mead

In my experience bringing beers to parties, there are only two kinds of beer drinkers. The first will say, "oh yeah, that's pretty good," then put it down and go back to their Miller Lite. The second will tie you up answering questions nonstop for half an hour. Point being, I don't think anyone wants a small amount of information on the label. They either don't care what it is, or they want to know everything about it. I'd put the stats on there too; at least ABV, since everyone's going to ask.
Beer is like porn. You can buy it, but it's more fun to make your own.

I like that the homebrew has been more popular than the commercial beer. And it isn't over the top with geekyness- in fact it appears perfectly normal and logical. However this may be influenced by that fact that I myself am a geek...

Love to have some of that lager. :D

That's a good line-up you got there.  If I were at that party I would be stoked that someone would bring good beer, and would actually put a description on it.  Now the people at the party know what to expect before drinking it.  Maybe some people will not bother reading it, but at least it is there for their information.

If you don't get in over your head, how are you ever going to know how tall you are.

Stats are on the labels  ;)

The party is mostly relatives so they all have a somewhat vested interest because its me brewing the beer.
Also, to a man there arent that many BMC drinkers in this crowd.
Go to a birthday party, communion, Christmas party etc with this group and there are lots of "funny looking labels"

I'm trying to provide something like you would find on the neck label of many beers without being overly descriptive.

I typically brew 5 different beers for my wife's birthday party each year.  Since quite a few of our friends are homebrewers and beer geeks, I started out with pretty extensive descriptions of the beers.  What I found is that the geeks didn't need them and other people didn't understand them.  Now I just give each beer a name and a brief description of the flavor.

I'd give a "one-liner:"  Name/style of beer, ABV, what to look for when drinking it.

e.g., Bavarian Hefeweizen, 5.5% ABV, a Southern German wheat beer possessing a distinctive yeast-derived aroma and flavor of bananas and cloves.

I'd also consider supplying plenty of plastic sampler cups so people can try samples of each beer before they settle on one.

When is this party?

I'll be in Veneta next week with several thousand friends  ;)

I live way too close to the Country Fair and avoid it like the plague.  Spent far too much time there in years past.  And yer too early for the party!

"Spent" too much time, or "wasted" too much time?

Sounds perfectly geeky to me.  ;)

To kick it up a geek notch or two, I would add the stats.  ;D
