What are you trying to filter? Boiling will kill any unwelcome life forms. But you might also have petroleum fumes, fertilizer runoff,  and such...

You would be better getting the lake water through a shallow well/hole because the ground will act as a filter.

You could use a gravity fed carbon block setup. Will trickle through depending on the head pressure.
