Forced to buy beer
« on: July 06, 2010, 06:32:45 pm »
We moved in May. I pretty much moved the whole house myself, one mini-van trip at a time. I had no time for brewing, and I have now run out of beer. I have some in the fermenter, but it won't be ready for a little while. This is the first time I've actually had to buy beer sine 06.

It's a very strange feeling.

I'm off to the supermarket. Wish me luck.

Sticker shock about to hit  :o
10 to 15 dollar six packs seem to dominate now.

Stop over. I haven't brewed for 6 months (gonna brew 15 gallons on Sunday), but we can find something around here.

Oh yes! Prices have indeed changed in the last few years. Latter part of 2007 prices shot up several dollars.

I was recently out of beer but a quickie brew session and I tapped a keg @ 14 days. Wonderful!

I know how you feel. I am still 8 days until my beer will be ready. Sucks big time, especially in a heat wave at the moment.

I know how you feel!  Back when I was in grad school, by brewing calendar got destroyed.  I still like to buy the occasional mix pack for variety, but I hear you on the price.  Craft used to be around $7-$9 a sixer around here.  Now, it's at least $9.  Makes me glad I brew!  Much more economical!

I'm starting to run low as well since I've been too busy to brew. With tha $9+ six pack prices I'm always worried that I get something I don't like and I end up sticking with the old favorites.

Look at the bright side. This will enable you to sample some commercial examples.  8)

Especially if you buy somewhere that allows mixed sixers.  Then you don't need to worry about getting stuck with five more of a beer you might not like.

I bought a six of Sierra Nevada Kellerweis Hefeweizen.

It's ok, but I can't wait to drink the five galllons of Hefe in my bucket.

But at $10 a six, I'm going to have to find some Bud American Ale soon.

Hey you can snag the yeast from that; and not feel so bad about blowing ten bucks!
Isn't the Bud even hanging out around 8 dollars per sixer?

love kellerweiss, its my go-to hefeweiss when I am in the mood for one, which isn't all that often, hence why i don't brew that style but once every couple of years.

$10 a six?? man that is highway robbery - I live in a rather high cost-of-living county, and it goes for $7.99 at the grocery, $7.49 at Total Wine, that sux man!

culturing the yeast is a great idea - I've a friend who is a HW nut - he's been using kellerweis yeast since the first six pack hit the shelves, and it is makes a great product - I think he's won 3 medals so far and he's currently fermenting a dunkelweiss with it - can't wait to see how that turns out!

Strangely I haven't felt like drinking lately.  I have plenty of great Colorado beer in the fridge, a nice IPA and Amber on tap.  Don't feel like drinking any of it.  Nothing wrong with short breaks here and there I suppose...
I buy the occasional 6 pack or two when I don't feel like drinking what I have on tap.  Goose Island is usually around 7 or 8 bucks for a sixer.  That or there's always my old standby for cheap times, that's right: PBR.
