Mailing Beers
« on: October 15, 2016, 01:15:35 PM »
I recently mailed some homebrews with FedEx to a friend out of state They claim the box was damaged and mailed it back the only thing that was missing was a can of  Julius from treehouse brewing A week later I received a  registered letter from FedEx saying that is illegal to send beer through the mail which I knew But how  do you mail your brews to family or  competitions out of state ?

It is illegal to mail beer. It is not illegal to ship it FedEx, but they don't have to accept it for shipping. It depends on the attitude of your local FedEx people.
You have to seriously pack any beer you send so the box doesn't get damaged.

Line your box with a trash bag, so if a bottle it can breaks it just leaks into the trash bag.

And put that into a larger box with plenty of packing.

I've had good luck with UPS.  For competitions, I wrap each bottle and can in the electronics bubble wrap you find at Home Depot.  Each sheet is 12" wide.  Then I pack in the box inside a trash bag and pack a ton of bubble wrap or newspaper to make sure nothing moves.

When you sent Fedex, did it go Fedex all the way through?  Sometimes Fedex is handed off the the USPS for delivery, depending on what service was selected.

I was looking around the forums and saw this link to a company that makes boxes for shipping beer. Might help you with issues of stuff breaking.

Hope it helps.

I put "Yeast Samples! Extremely Fragile!" All over the outside of my box. Never had an issue with UPS or FedEx.

Several years ago while I was still employed I worked in a shipping department and watched as a UPS guy gave a package covered with fragile stickers a hail Mary toss into the back of his truck.

Which if they find out that you mailed alcohol you could be in some trouble, it's illegal to mail via the US Post Office.

Yeah, I've seen the same thing a time or two, from both FedEx and UPS.
