Market research in Starting Your Own Brewery
« on: October 28, 2016, 12:17:53 pm »
Just started digging into Dick Cantwell's book and find it very detailed and logical. Without a business background, I'm not sure where to find the specific numbers he includes in his business plan. For instance, how many kegs per month the competition sells and it's percent of market share. Do breweries report these numbers somewhere?
Thanks for any insight.
Derek

It all depends on what size of a brewery you are looking at.  The best thing to do is go to a brewery and ask them

Those numbers are in the New Brewer once a year. Also available to members on the Brewers Association. If you are serious, get a Brewery in Planning membership, a little cheaper I think.

$195 for membership.  I've been curious what all you gain access to and if it's worth it when you are in the preliminary stages (kicking the tires, if you will).

That I can't answer. Contact the BA and see if they can tell you if it is worth that.

That will look like pocket change once you start spending for the brewery.

You get access to the forum (It's a pretty good forum) and you get the periodical New Brewer which is excellent. There is the Power Hour workshops that are excellent as well.

The MBAA books are also very good and worthy of reading if you are seriously planning a brewery. The cost for the 3 books is about $125

Depending on the state, I know Wisconsin has a monthly report on sales from every brewery that brews in Wisconsin. This comes from the State's department of revenue. They get paid excise tax too!

Wow, that's some great detail. Federal agencies aren't allowed to disclose individually identifying data, so the TTB only has aggregates
It's such a fine line between stupid and clever.
