thermomoter broke
« on: January 18, 2017, 10:21:53 am »
My thermometer broke and little black pellets went everywhere it is a floating thermometer with a red top . the part that broke was at the bottom of the thermometer. Should I be concerned if they went into the wort?

I did the same thing one time. It's a dumper!

Check them with a magnet.  If they stick to the magnet they are made of steel (or at least something iron based) and they should not be an issue.

If they don't stick to the magnet they could be lead, but are not necessarily lead.  Many inert metals are not magnetic either.

I have broken a thermometer in a batch too.  I didn't worry about it too much and used the wort anyway.  (it's taking all I have not finish this with a  joke about lead poisoning symptoms making it hard to think.  8)

I know it isn't the best answer but it's all I've got right now.

Bummer. This is why testing samples is good practice.

Do yourself a favor and dump it. Rebrew it and you won't have to worry.

Or buy a thermapen. Broke 2 glass thermometers, splurged and bought one. Best cooking investment I've made, not just good for beer.
Corn is a fine adjunct in beer.

And don't buy stale beer.

I think I just learned a lesson, not going to worry about getting one that breaks anymore. I have another one that is all metal and is long with a dial type to read temps. I have 2 and they work good gonna stay with them.

My initial concerns would be mercury, lead, and glass.

looking at it after I cleaned up I don't think I got anything in the wort (at least I hope not) have finished the boil and it is in the fermenter. All it can do is kill me (prop me up beside the juke box when I'm gone.)
will try to get back to you if anything happens.
