Mom got me an extract beer kit this year.....guess all the sacks of grain never register. I love that woman. Continue on...
I'd be ok with an extract kit. I'd for sure ditch the yeast, but otherwise I'd give it a go.

I bought a Mr Beer kit on post-Christmas clearance a year or two ago just for the fermenter. The kit made an enjoyable beer with a yeast upgrade and a bit of CaraHell steeped/late hops added in.
IMO the Mr Beer fermenter can be added to the horrible products list. The current versions have channels cut in the rim that allows gas to escape. With this there is no method to sealing it up post fermentation. No biggie if you're on the ball and package quickly.
I received a nice beer product from my in-laws.
