I came in low yesterday in my ESB and added hot water to get it to my mash temp. I probably have around 50 all grain batches in the books. It's good for us neophytes to hear those with 10x more experience still adjust as needed.

I would have done that, but there was no room in the cooler.  Ended up at 50% mash efficiency into the kettle..oh, well!

You thought about fly sparging. Come on Denny, it is OK.......I had that happen on an Imperial Stout. In the end it was a fantastic Stout. All ends well when brewing.

Yep, totally have setbacks from time to time. My last helles I used a new stainless chiller and did not clean it as thoroughly as I thought I did. Ended up with purple boiling foam in the kettle. Seriously. The foam from the boil start was bright purple.

Needless to say that is the first batch I have dumped before kegging it in about 8 years. Oh well, learned my lesson.

Good to know, I just opened a box with my shiny new stainless chiller in it.  I'll home for no purple foam.

I highly recommend a sink full of hot Dawn suds and a blue scrub pad. Then a thorough rinse and it's ready to rock. Mine came with a warning to clean first as a reminder.

Yeah, I wasn't sure it I should do Dawn or purple power and then dawn.

The paperwork mine came with recommended what I posted FWIW. I'm 4 or 5 batches in on it and no purple foam or beer.

Only took me about an hour to be OK with it.  I mean, what else can ya do?

Right, it didn't take me eight days to get OK with it.  But it took at least an hour.

I added some extra sugar to the saison to bump it up a bit.  And the quad became a dubbel.
