Yeast cake has funky smell..
« on: March 07, 2017, 09:43:26 am »
Soo I racked an amber ale to secondary about a month ago and I left the yeast cake and sanitized water in the bucket for over a month.
Now it as a funky smell. Not sure if it's my paranoia getting to me or what!?!

Do you guys think it's safe to reuse?
Oh and this would be the 2nd time being from a batch back in November.

Dump it. Next time pack in a smaller container with beer on top. Store in the fridge as well.

What he said.
If it smells bad, it most likely is.

I don't know why I didn't store it in the fridge.
This would be my second attempt at reusing my yeast.

That would be a record for me. :)

Yep.

After racking your beer off the cake be sure to leave a small amount of beer on top of the cake. Swirl up the yeast cake into suspension with the remaining beer liquid, sanitize the opening of your fermenter and pour the yeast and beer solution into a sanitized mason jar. Put cap on lightly and directly into cold fridge. Come back later and gently open cap to allow excess CO2 to disperse, then put cap a bit tighter on. Repeat last step 2-3 times and tighten each time a bit tighter with cap. All good. Try to use within 2 wks.

Best if repitched within 2 days.
