Swamp Heads Big Nose IPA Clone Recipe???
« on: June 03, 2017, 08:19:40 am »
Hey All!

I've been drinking this beer lately, Big Nose IPA, that I would love to try to duplicate (if possible). It's brewed just south of where I live in Gainesville Fl. at Swamp Head Brewery. I haven't seen any "Clone" recipes out there for this beer so I was hoping for some input. Thanks!!!

Never tired it. First step should be an email to the brewery. Some are willing to share a lot of info.

Never thought about contacting the Brewer. I wouldn't think that they would not give up a recipe that their actually selling...... hummmm.  That's a thought though. Thx

Some breweries are very open, some will give rough info, some secretive, and others are jerks about it.

If that doesn't work, let me know.  I know the original brewer (who is no longer with Swamphead) and he may be able to share.

Craig says:
OG 1.079
54 IBUs
83% 2-row
12% Munich
5% crystal 40
Centennial at 60 minutes
Centennial and Amarillo at 15 minutes
Centennial at 5 minutes
Amarillo dry hop
WLP 001

That should get you started.  It looks a lot like my IPA as well, but mine never did as well as Craig's in Homebrew competitions.  He won a lot of medals before he went pro.

That's as basic as an IPA can get.

Thanks Jeffy!!

I contacted Swamp Head, they did not reply to me. I was a bit surprised to be honest. Excellent beer. I'll try this recipe out and post the results. Thanks again

Sorry to bother you with questions but I just want to do this right. I am somewhat new to brewing and I have no idea the amount of hops I should be using for the boil. How much would you recommend to use of the centennial hops for the first 60 mins, the second addition (centennial and Amarillo) and the final centinial at 5 minutes and dry hopping? Thanks in advance!!!

I've never had this beer, so it's tough to judge. This assumes 5 gallons and that you use software like Beersmith, but having brewed many, many IPAs, a good general approach (in keeping with this hop schedule) would be:

1/   Add 50 IBU Centennial @ 60 minutes
2/   2 oz EACH of Centennial and Amarillo @ 15 mins
3/   2 oz of Centennial @ 5 mins.
4/   I don't know how much hop aroma is in this beer when fresh but 4 oz dry hopped Amarillo would be reasonable. I bet this gets you fairly close.

Just my $0.02 .

Edit -  Good luck! Let us know what you end up doing, and how the beer comes out.
