Is it safe to assume this will be in the Oregon Convention Center. So I can start scoping out hotels (especially hotels I can get with points)?

Don't know foir certain but I think that's likely.  Why not wait til the conference hotel is announced and get the discount there?

I can only assume that's a big reason (coming to the Gulf South in the summer). Our laws in Louisiana are a little wonky now where mixing commercial and homebrew are concerned, but New Orleans can certainly handle the size of the event. But we don't really have the club infrastructure to organize it yet.

I think New Orleans, along with Las Vegas, is a city that shouldn't host a conference, for the collective good of the membership.

Vegas could be good. Cheap flights and cheap hotel rooms.

Last time it was in Vegas there were issues IIRC.

Because free with points is better than cheap?

Well, I am under the impression that there were issues in Vegas previously which have led to a 'never again' attitude in the higher ups. It was in New Orleans in 1996 (before I joined the AHA so wasn't even aware of it), and I'm not aware of those sorts of issues happening. That being said, in my experience, the free availability of alcohol has not been a stumbling block in NHCs in the recent past. There was plenty of opportunity to over-imbibe even under the separation restrictions in SD. Under our current legal environment, it would be similar here in that restriction of serving commercial beer would become a little weird.

Hard to deny that!  For me, proximity to the conference is the main consideration since I go back and forth from the conference to the hotel several times a day.

Las Vegas was 2004, but I didn't go.. I remember it was advertised at Chicago 2003, my first NHC.

What issues? Honest question.

My comment was with tongue firmly in cheek. I would personally love to see it in NOLA, especially since it could do double duty being able to visit family.

How's the hotel situation? Having walked by, I'd guess the convention center is big enough, but I don't recall there being any huge hotels nearby.

Drew could fill you in better than me since he was there.  I heard stories of hookers working the "social club" part.  OTOH, I heard stories of hookers there on "pro night" this year!

Missed that this year, but saw them at one evening session in Oakland.

The New Orleans Convention center is enormous.  I was there in 2009 for a food industry conference with 50,000+ attendees and they used up the whole thing.  AHA would only need half the hall or less.  I know they can divide it up for multiple events, but they may charge a premium for that, which could stretch a non-profit like the AHA.  I'd almost argue the NOCC might be too big.  There may be a better venue in New Orleans for a crowd of 6000, rather than 50,000.

Looking at google maps there's several hotels within 2-3 blocks of the Center, certainly within walking distance.  When I was there I stayed right on Canal Street which is less than a mile, and the border between the Convention District and French Quarter.  It was walkable, but it was hot as blazes and I was wearing a suit and tie (job interview).  In tshirt and shorts it would have been fine.

Prostitutes are a fact of conventions.
