Heffe or not Heffe?
« on: July 27, 2017, 06:16:02 pm »
I just brewed what is supposed to be a Heffeweizen last night, but when I tasted the wort it was much hoppier than you might expect a Heffe to be (delicious none the less). According to my BrewTarget software, it's a Heffe with the exception of bitterness. The IBUs came out to 20, and the "style" calls for 8-15 IBUs. I know IBUs don't have anything to do with flavor, but if I have a hoppy flavor, is it still considered a Heffe? My recipe also calls for another 1.5oz of dry hopping. I'm not very familiar with "styles" and what defines them. Could my beer still be classified as a Heffe?

Quick summary of the recipe:
6 gal batch

7 lb white wheat malt
5 lb Briess - Goldpils Vienna Malt
mashed at 157F for 1 hour

1 hour boil
1 oz Amarillo @ 20 min
1.5 oz Saaz @ 5 min
1.5 oz Amarillo for 7 days in secondary

Looks like an excellent American Wheat beer. My rule is if it ain't brewed for a competition, brew for you. It's your hobby.
Beer is my bucket list,

Definitely not hefe with those hops. What yeast did you use?
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

Ok yeah. You need a hefe yeast for a hefe. Looks like a nice hoppy American wheat or something like Bob said. I don't brew to style that often so I wouldnt worry about it if it's not going in a comp

It's not going into a competition, I was just curious. It seems like it's going to turn out delicious either way.

Sounds like an American Wheat (without checking any guidelines).

Yeah, fairly similar to Gumball Head (a classic American Wheat). Especially using a neutral strain, I'd definitely call it American Wheat over a Hefeweizen.
