Not sure where everbody else is but I live in Southern CA. They like to price gouge.

I go to the one in Burbank, which I think is one of the larger hubs, but I used to go to the Northridge location (I work in the Valley).

They didn't even charge me when I exchanged my original tank which needed a new hydro.

FWIW, I have not had good luck with AirGas here in VT. They really gear towards commercial accounts, so a local Joe like me would get charged an arm and a leg for a swap, and they don't offer to fill at all. I think they quoted me something crazy like $50 for a swap AND I had to use their tank. Luckily both LHBS's that are near me offer exchanges for $15-18, so I do that. I had to give up my shiny new tank tho, so I recommend making peace with that now...
That's bonkers.

Are airgas locations independently owned? That's the only thing I can think of that would cause such a varied price experience.

Yeah, I don't get it. I get a swap on 5 lb tanks at the local Airgas for $11. Not much more for 10 lb tanks.

HossierBrew, what's your opinion on industrial vs food grade gas?

Food grade is more pure and purity is good in terms of maintaining freshness in your kegged beer IMO.

Got ya. I was thinking along the lines of health not quality of beer. Makes sense.

I live in Colorado.  Some of my work colleagues also brew and keg, and they told me about a couple of places--said it was $25-30.  Went to my LHBS and asked where to get CO2 and was directed to a local hyponics store called way to grow.  Spent $4.   They have now gone up to $10 for a 5 lb tank.  Look at nursery supply places!
