Purge keg with Iodophor
« on: July 16, 2017, 11:28:20 am »
Is it okay to purge a keg with BTF Iodophor? I know it is a no rinse sanitizer at 12.5 ppm, but, I still wonder if people have any experience using it to purge a keg. The BTF Iodophor instructions say to let the sanitized item air dry. That is not be possible when purging a keg. So, there would be some small amount of BTF Iodophor left in the keg when filling with beer.

That's what I do.  And frankly nothing really gets fully dried that I've used iodophor on (fermenters, etc)

I use iodophor for kegs. No foam is a plus here.

Iodophor in my kegs, too. At 12.5 ppm, I purge all I can and go with it. Like Steve said, I don't like foam there.

Thanks, everyone. The other reason I want to use Iodophor is it doesn't leach calcium out of my water. I use starsan now but the solution turns white pretty fast.  I don't like the idea of leaving calcium participate behind Though I have never tasted anything related to that.

Saniclean is Five Star's pump friendly, reduced foam sanitizer.  I use it regularly.  Another option, not sure if it will help with the deposits.

Personally, I would go with Saniclean and not Iodophor but again, each to their own.

Iodophor is great for kegs. After purging, if you can give the keg an hour or so for all the liquid to sheet down the sides just depress the liquid poppet and let the last of the iodophor spray up your arm.  What's left doesn't effect the lightest pilsner or wheat beer.

There's no problem using iodophor at its recommended concentration when purging kegs.  Even if you leave behind an ounce in 5 gallons, the resulting iodine is significantly below the flavor threshold.  I was a little bit worried before I started doing it, but I haven't experienced any noticeable effects.

I guess I am late to the party. It looks like purging kegs with Iodophor is pretty common.

Thanks!
