Ekuanot hops - best pairing?
« on: January 11, 2020, 07:49:33 am »
Looking for a second hop to pair with Ekuanot

"Ekuanot is described as having aromas of melon, berry, orange peel, lime, papaya, pine and fresh peppers."

Anyone have any suggestions?

I did three IPAs with Equinox/Ekuanot and a second hop 50:50 when it came out:

Simcoe
Chinook
Citra

Citra was the hands down favorite.  In fact I have a IIPA recipe named Citranox that is in the rotation.

Equanot plays well with American hops with its fruity flavor and aroma. It is one of my favorite of the newer hops. I’ve used it with CTZ, Amarillo, Chinook, Citra, and Cascade. I cannot tell you which was the best, but I enjoyed all of the combinations.

Just had a Columbus/Ekuanot IPA from LA Aleworks that was spectacular.

I love Ekuanot and it's been a staple in my "juicy" IPA style (ala Trillium, not the lactose/milkshake bombs) for a few years. It pairs well with Citra, and any citrus fruit forward American hop, really.  I have a beer on tap now where I used a bunch of the cryo Ekuanot I got at the Homebrew conference YCH booth in an New England IPA along with Columbus and Mosaic.  Columbus is a great hop to provide a little backbone to any fruity hops in my opinion.

For 5 gallons, the hop schedule was:

0.25 oz Columbus, 60 min
1.75 oz Columbus, whirlpool (180F)
3 oz Ekuanot, whirlpool (180F)

3 oz Ekuanot, dry (day 3, primary fermentation)
3 oz Mosaic, dry (day 3, primary fermentation)
2 oz Columbus, dry (day 3, primary fermentation)

I've only brewed with them once (so far), in the IPA I have on tap now. Went 2:1 Citra:Ekaunot on the advice that it could be a "Citra booster" and Citra being astronomically expensive right now. It didn't really work as advertised but did add a distinct orange and melon character, and maybe a little bit of an herbal thing, but hard to say with only a single lot of either hop.

I ordered the Eukanot and Citra it will be here Wednesday I'll probably brew with it this weekend or sometime next week. Debating on using the Kviek slurry I have (Hordinal) or just go with a standard West Coast ale yeast...

Shhhh! Let keep the demand for Ekuanot low so the prices stay low. It seems to really be gaining in popularity. Once I can't get my 2 oz for $2.99 I'm coming back to this thread to chastise you all.

I recently saw an Amber recipe with 1 oz Citra at 20, 1 oz Amarillo at 10, and 1 oz Eukanot at 0. I haven’t brewed it but it sounds good. Of course, they all sound good on paper.
