It has taken me awhile, but my latest version of an Irish Red Ale is my tastiest yet. One of the keys is to not overdo it with the Black Roasted Barley--I put too much in my first attempt and it became an Irish Brown and tasted like Moxie. My second attempt was a bit better, but this year's version I only used 1 percent (1.5 oz. for 5.5 gallons). I also learned that some Irish brewers use Bramling Cross hops for their reds rather than only the standard East Kent Golding, and so I tried this and it adds a nice faint touch of blackberry.

Anyway, here is my latest recipe:

Irish Ale Malt--89 percent
Crystal 40--7 percent
Crystal 120--2 percent
Black Roasted Barley--1 percent
East Kent Golding--1 oz. at 60 min.
Brawling Cross--half oz. at 15 min.
WLP 004 Irish Ale yeast

Best of luck with your attempt.
George

Brew and grow...

Best advice I got was from jon... srm 14-15.  Get it as close to brilliant clarity as you can and I always recommend a blended base malt.
