Dune books, gotta be #1.  You're right about when it clicks, it's just amazing.  Got the encyclopidea and all. 

If you guys like William Gibson, I'm reading All tomorrows parties right now, you gotta check out Neil Stephenson.  Snow Crash will blow your mind.  Awsome cybepunk.  The opening is classic.  Cryptonimicron is cool as well as the Baroque cycle.  His last one, Anathem was neat too.   A good break from his heavier works.
