BJCP questions
« on: November 23, 2017, 09:07:28 am »
Which category would session IPA fit in?
When I look on the BJCP guidelines I don't see any cider or mead categories, am I just not looking in the right spot?

Session IPA is like an overhopped APA, which is great if you want to win competitions.  A few judges might ding an overhopped APA, but most probably won't.

I agree.  I entered a session ipa as both a specialty ipa and a pale ale.  It got killed as a specialty ipa and took 2nd as a pale ale.

Me, too.  I can appreciate an APA on the higher end of the hop scale, but not to the extent of a session IPA.

Sounds like another candidate for a Brulosophy xbmt -- session IPA vs. APA -- can the average idiot taste any difference.

I would say that a session IPA entered in the Pale Ale category should get hit on lack of maltiness, balance and mouthfeel, IF the judges know what they are doing.

Exactly.  to quote the style guidelines:

More balanced and drinkable, and less intensely hop-focused and bitter than session-strength American IPAs (aka Session IPAs).

I was thinking about making a session IPA for an upcoming comp, but couldn't quite determine the best way to enter it. After some searching online earlier today, I found the same consensus was to enter it into the specialty IPA category.

Now to formulate one :)
