Gluten free chestnut beer
« on: November 13, 2017, 11:57:27 am »
I am going to try this recipe I found on the AHA recipe section:  https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/homebrew-recipe/gluten-free-chestnut-beer/

It is for some family members that have issues with gluten. Has anyone tried this one out and maybe have some feedback on how to make it better ?  The thought of using chestnuts sounds good but the recipe does seems a little to simple.

I was thinking of trying one of the recipes in the latest issue of Zymurgy - it has a great article on GF beer brewing.  I'm skeptical on the results, but also have several friends with this nasty allergy, so willing to try it. I may scale down for the first attempt, especially if I try and incorporate chestnuts over the other ingredients.

I haven't tried any gluten free beers or brewing gluten free. You might want to check out this:

Ground Breaker Brewing out of Portland has gluten free beers for all their beers. They posted their American Pale Ale recipe online.

Thanks to Denny and Drew for the discussion about this and the link. (Love the podcast.)

Thanks guy's.

I got the chestnut chips and am going to brew the recipe from the American homebrew recipe site today. I'll report back on on how it came out in a few weeks.

Riceral,  Thanks for the link, I think I am going to try this one the next time I do a GF batch. I never would have thought to use lentils. It sounds good and much less expensive than the chestnut chips.

OK beer is done and carbonated. Had to fine with gelatin to clear it up (very cloudy). Now looks really good but it tastes like very bitter chestnuts. The AVB was suppost to be 4.8 but came out at 8.1. I do not like it but I have a keg of a ESB I made a while ago that came out very blad. Tried mixing the two 50/50 and that was very good. A nice ale with a slight bitter chestnut taste. I would not make it again but at least I do not need to pour it out.

For now on I am just going to use "clarity frim" to reduce the gluten in my beer.
