Rust in brand new HLT kettle
« on: April 22, 2018, 10:58:33 pm »
I got a new brew built hlt, made a beer with RO water adjusted with salts and minerals. I finished up the day and saw several small rust spots in the bottom sides of the kettle? Anyone have the same issue?

I had the same experience with a kettle I bought on Amazon from a no-name-vendor.  Not only did I have issues with rust, I also had issues with the no-weld fitting for the sight gauge!  I couldn’t get it to stop leaking! I bought it because it was cheap and I got exactly what I paid for.

Yup, I had this happen with my new MegaPot.  I reached out to the retailer and they suggested that it hadn't been properly passivated during manufacturing and pointed me towards Bar Keepers Friend.  That worked way better than I expected and the rust didn't come back on my subsequent batch.

It happens. BKF will remove and also help passivate the surface preventing return.

Thanks jtoots (great to see you again) and Stevie for the tip.  I’m shopping on Amazon and see BKF sold as a Cleaner or as a Cleaner and Polish.  Can I assume the BKF you’re recommending is the Cleaner only??

I wasn't sure on this one either, ended up with the "Soft Cleanser Liquid (13 OZ) and Non Scratch Scouring Scrubber Kit"

Yes, cleaner only, not cleaner + polish.

I like the liquid stuff too. The powder isn’t bad, but the liquid is just much easier to work with and doesn’t clump up in the container.
