Beer Smith Recommendations
« on: June 20, 2018, 09:00:17 am »
Hello all,

Wondering what the general consensus is regarding Beer Smith.

Looking for opinions on which version, 1-2 or 3, is the best bang for your buck.

Ease of use, accuracy, and simplicity, are the attributes I value, don't need all the bells and whistles, just want to perform basic calculations; grain bill, IBU, color, etc.

Any and all feedback appreciated.

Thanks!

They're all cheap, go with the latest version which just came out.

It takes just as much time to dial in either v2 or v3, so I would opt for v3 given the added functions.  Since Brad has a history of continuing to add features during the run of a given version, it will be supported much longer and you have the benefit of any new features he rolls out.

V3 seems nice. I like the usability. The layout seems more intuitive than V2. Plus V3 has refinements in certain capabilities (like water treatment, cloud support) that may never be in V2.

I would definitely no invest in V2.

No, the announcement email I received from Beersmith stated the mobile version will be out in late July.

I've had BS2 for a couple of years now. It took time to get used to but now I wouldn't do without it. I highly, strongly, resolutely recommend setting up customized equipment and mash profiles.

I pre-ordered BS3 and installed it late last week and so far love everything about it. The revamped water tool is easier to use in 3... using whirlpool hop additions has become easier to calculate in 3... I can now select more than one style profile to view (in 2 it was one style or all styles. There was no in between).

I would say if you don't have any of them yet get BS3. Brad will continue support for 2 for a while but eventually that support will end.

If I didn’t have v2 I’d get v3.  Since I have v2 I’ll just stick with it until a) it no longer works or b) v4 comes out in a cpl yrs and it includes a ‘skip to the next step’ feature in the mash and boil timer.  I just use a separate timer now. That’s the only feature I need since I use Bru’n water for water adjustments.

I use BS and love it. It was a little interesting getting everything dialed in with my system but now it’s dead nuts accurate. I’ve always been annoyed it didn’t handle water calcs that well and Im excited to see it now does. I would always use BF water calculator with RO water and have had good luck but was always annoyed needing to open and enter things again. It will be nice to do it all in one place.
