off flavor kits
« on: June 26, 2018, 07:11:24 am »
Hello Everyone. I'm new to the forum and aha member since beginning of this year :)
I am trying to train in off flavors. I am wondering, does AHA members have any discount in siebel off flavor kits (or any other off flavor kit) or at any brew supplies stores that sell these? No one makes them here (Argentina) and their very very expensive/difficult to import so I'm looking for a cheaper alternative.

The BJCP used to offer them at a discount.  You might check with them.

I got one a few years ago. You must be an active BJCP judge.

Yep.  I thought the OP might be or know someone who was.

The last time our club had an off-flavor session earlier this year, I ordered the kit directly from Siebel.   They ship from Germany, which was not inexpensive.  Maybe you've already discovered that.

The BJCP has a subsidized kit for BJCP members, at $100 U.S. and I don't know about shipping.

You might try exploring cicerone.org which also sells sensory kits.  They're also expensive.  Neither option really makes a lot of economic sense unless you have other homebrewers or a local club to help share the costs.

I have bought them a few times to test my tasting panel at my brewery. Pretty sure I got mine through Siebel. There are a few places that sell them. Maybe the BJCP only sells to active judges but Siebel will sell to anyone AFAIK. They ain't cheap. $150-300 or more depending on how many off flavors you are testing for.

I went to a tasting seminar at homebrew  con and I can still taste the isovaleric acid.
Some day we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny
