Cologne Water Profile in Bru'n Water
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:11:11 am »
I ran the latest Bru'n Water update and noticed Cologne in the water profiles section. Is this good for brewing a Kolsch or similar light ales?

That profile is direct from the Koln water utility and it represents the quality from wells in the vicinity of the river and the old town. It is representative of what most of the Kolsch brewers would employ. Be aware that they all are using either saurergut or acid malt to neutralize the water supply's alkalinity.

The slightly elevated sulfate content in their water agrees with my perceptions of their Kolsch having a lightly drying finish to the substantial maltiness. It works.

How do I update Bru'n Water? I have the supporter's version but have never updated it since 2015. I use Yahoo not gmail and cannot find any emails related to it. I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

I would be VERY surprised if any of the larger Koln breweries are using water as is.

Cologne (boiled)
Ca 37
Mg 10
Na 25
SO4 70
Cl 35
HCO3 80

(Which is surprisingly similar to my tap water, guess I ought to try a Kölsh one of these days.)

EDIT Martin, I hope it's okay to post that, I'm not clear on whether it's your intellectual property.   If so I'll remove the post.

Nah, its OK. Its included as a convenience to Bru'n Water users but it came from a review of the water utility's water quality records.

I hadn't even noticed it in there until this thread.  I looked and got kind of overexcited when I saw the similarity to my tap water, and posted before I realized that while it's available as public domain,  the immediate source was your work product.   Glad it's cool.

Thanks for sharing since I can't figure out how to update. I was pretty much going with yellow balanced but will give this a shot next time for sure.
