Equipment you own but have never used
« on: August 14, 2010, 07:45:18 pm »
Maybe you won something in a homebrew comp, maybe you got it from a retiring homebrewer, maybe it seemed great or was on sale

and now it sits unused

What is it?
(and maybe people can chime in to tell you that you need to try it out, or it's worthless)

For me - it's a filter, bought it because it was the deal of the day and I figured if I have a beer that won't clear I can use  .. 2 years and it's still in the box unopened

March pump and a therminator.  Won the pump in a competition, got the therminator for $60.  They're on my list of things to incorporate into my system, just haven't gotten around to it.

7 gallon stainless steel conical here.  It was cheap on eBay and I wasn't thinking clearly.  It just doesn't fit into my brewing routine.  Too much extra time cleaning for the amount of beer you can ferment at a time.  Been sitting here for two years without ever being used. Haven't gotten around to trying to sell it but will soon.  I may try to trade it for a pump.

My wife and I were in our LHBS yesterday and due to her love of hard cider almost bought a $250 stainless steel press (but no grinder).  With that said knowing my wife (as much as I love her) I would like to make a future post, so here it goes....

"bought a $250 stainless steel press (but no grinder) for making hard cider.  Used it once and realized it's not worth it since we can go to the store and by the juice organically for cheaper...anybody want to buy a $250 stainless steel press (but no grinder)?"

A little plastic thing that holds my racking cane for me while I siphon. It looked cool at the store, I guess.

I got two Erlenmeyer flasks, 3L and 5L. I have not build a lager fridge yet so no starters for me yet. I stick to dry for the ales. I just scored a Temp controller for cheap so the lager fridge will be here soon.

Not to mentioned finally got around to spring cleaning in late summer I may have room for it too.

I have no experience with dried lager yeasts, but if you're used to dried yeast for your ales you might want to try them for your lagers and see how they come out.

Do you not bottle, or just don't like this device?

I have a BG, and love it.  but I only bottle for sharing and comps.

Ok, I've gotta ask.. why do you consider the lager fridge to be vital to making starters? All my starters happen on the stir plate in the "lab" at room temperature.

Gotta read his whole post.  I think's he's saying that since he doesn't have a lager fridge, he doesn't do lagers AND he said for his ales, he uses dry yeast THEREFORE he hasn't done any starters.
