Imperial Porter with adjuncts category?
« on: January 03, 2019, 07:29:51 am »
I have what I am calling a 9.5% ABV Imperial Porter with cinnamon, cocoa nibs, and vanilla that I would like to enter in a comp. Would this simply go in the Spice/Herb/Vegetable Specialty Category?
On Tap/Bottled: IPL, Adjunct Vienna, Golden Stout, Honey Lager
Fermenting: IPA
Up Next: mexi lager, Germerican pale ale

That's what I'd do.

The official BJCP subcategory is "30A. Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer."  I point this out because you use the term "Specialty," which is not a subcategory of spiced beer.  I often judge the spiced beer category and would look forward to your beer.

Yes that is what I was referring to off the top of my head. Is it acceptable to list "imperial porter" as the base style? Thanks for your help!!!

Yes. The base style doesn't have to be an official style.

With the addition of cocoa and cinnamon it pretty much has to go in Spice/Herb/Veg.  As Kramerog mentioned, the base style doesn't have to be a "classic" style.

I have an Imperial Milk Stout with cocoa nibs that's in a similar situation.  Milk stout only goes up to 6~6.5% and mine is 9% so I throw the Imperial qualifier on it, but with the cocoa nibs the plan was always to put it in SHV and not Sweet Stout.

I also agree with kramerog that this sounds delicious! Good luck in the comp!

Agreed.  30A is the place for this.

The cocoa and vanilla character has faded substantially in the past weeks however the cinnamon is still present. I assume I just shouldn't note the addition of vanilla and cocoa and just go with "Imperial Porter with cinnamon"?
