Favorite mixed drinks
« on: August 15, 2010, 11:30:29 PM »
Martini's. Ok a little strong but how about mixed drinks?

Me it's the Negroni. Actually a modified Negroni.

Two completely different drinks:

2-3oz Gin or Vodka
1/4 oz Campari
squeeze of lime

Plenty of ice in a Rocks glass. Stir. Enjoy.

Tastes like Ruby Red grapefruit juice from two unique perspectives. Irresistible. :D

A properly made Margarita (on the rocks) followed by a Mojito.
Just brew it...

Mixed drinks or cocktails?

Mixed drink (hot weather): Tanqueray and Tonic

Mixed drink (college flashback): Caucasian, dude

Cocktail: either a dry Grey Goose vodka martini with 3 olives, or a perfect rob roy, both straight up.
(a rob roy is a scotch manhattan, perfect means equal parts sweet and dry vermouth, so 2-3 oz scotch, splash of both vermouths, twist)

Aperitif: Kir Royale (champagne with creme de cassis and a twist)

I like to mix a little ice into my bourbon.

One ice cube in Bourbon/Rye/Scotch or Thomas Tew rum is about perfect. Adds just enough water and gets it to the right temp too.

Hot weather.

Vodka/Tonic or New Amsterdam Gin/Tonic 1/3 to 1/4 of a lime depending on the lime size. When Key Limes are around its half one of those little beauties.

Wine cooler, yeah I said it and am man enough to admit it. Equal parts jug Red and Ginger Ale.......... dont skimp on the ice!

Beergaritas on the rocks.
6 pack of Corona (I like to have a clear bottle for every 12 beers I bottle up)
8+ oz Tequila
Can of limeade
Mix them by the pitcher, shake each glass well with lots of ice and a slice of lime.

+1 to Mojitos

Cool weather.
I've been drinking Captain Morgan and Coke (NFL) for 20+ years every Fall. Its how I got my nickname and I'm not about to stop now..................... Once in a while I'll switch it up with a Jim Beam and Coke.

Manhattans are great before dinner.
Never got into Rob Roys but it sounds good, might have to give them a whirl.
Rob Roy with Rye (what ever that would be............) might be nice too.

A simple screwdriver, nobody can mess that up.  50/50; vodka and high pulp OJ.  Favorite vodka's are either Grey Goose or Krystoph / Krystov (sp?).... Absolute is all hype imo, it has a bite to it.  Haven't tried a martini yet... guess I should.

I love the full-bodied complexity of a Manhattan myself.  While most dry martinis are really just, well, let's be frank, really cold gin with a whisper of vermouth, a Manhattan is sort of stockier, richer drink.  I like martinis as well (particularly when garnished in the elaborate, carnivorous fashion as shown in the recent martini thread!), but of the two Manhattans are my favorite.  Unless the bourbon or rye whiskey is so good that it really warrants being served by itself, in which case, bitters and sweet vermouth can live to mix another day.

The earlier mention of Kir Royale brings to mind a favorite variation of mine, Kir Normand...sparkling dry cider with creme de cassis.  I love the flavor of blackcurrants almost devotedly and the sweetness tames the otherwise sharply dry ciders I tend to brew.  Along those lines is a faux-mixed drink, my approximation of the Norman "pommeau" which is fresh apple cider blended with apple eax-de-vie to form a sweet 20% ABV drink akin to a fortified wine.  I do it with a 750ml of Martinellis apple cider and a 750ml of Laird's Bonded Apple Brandy.  Makes two bottles of something very interesting I think.

+1. Those are my faves, in that order.

I had a mojito once that had way too much mint for my taste.  The heavy mintiness and alcohol made me think I should be swishing the cocktail around my mouth and then spitting it into the sink.  It was a cruzan "premixed" drink, maybe one made properly from mint leaves would be more subtle.  As it was I had to dilute it with some lemonade to make it drinkable.

Isn't that the case with most any "premixed" drink?  I've always found them to be too sickly sweet or something.
