An avatar
« on: August 17, 2010, 09:53:06 am »
I looked up this topic and followed the instructions for an avatar.   Evidently, that was my first mistake.  We have the option of taking one from either photobucket, etc.. or uploading one ourselves, right.  I go to profile, then modify profile, then forum profile info.  I then clicked the box for upload my own and selected a file.  I hit the update at the bottom of the page and nothing happened.  Does file size matter?  This file is about 2.5 MB.  I can scale it back it need be.  Thanks in advance.
Well...I woke up this morning and I got myself a beer

It sounds like you're doing everything right, so it might be file size.  I can't find any specifics on that, though.  You might try with a smaller file and see if that does it.

Yeah, probably.. the max your avatar is allowed to be is 65x65 pixels. Definitely scale that puppy!

I think that did the trick, scaling the pic back to 65 x 65 pixels.  By the way, I'm one of the few who thinks the forum will be a huge improvement over Tech Talk.  People just have to learn not to be afraid of change and accept that there will be a learning curve at first.

Thanks again, guys!

I'm not vain enough to use my real image. I'd pick somebody good looking.

I really enjoy watching Julia's older cooking shows, when she was actually cooking.

I went to upload a new avatar jpg from my hard drive and when I click change my profile it just defaults to the no picture selection.  I know my photos are scaled correctly (65 x 65 pixels) and are small enough (29 kb), but no joy.

I tried to revert back to previous pictures used for avatar, uploaded from my hard drive, but same - same... no joy.

What did I do to piss off the avatar gods?

Do you have nothing better to do than change your avatar?
Hmmm....   Why did I just post that?

Are you sure you've got the "I will upload my own picture" button selected?

This is the equivalent of the computer guy asking you to make sure it's plugged in :)

The selection automatically goes to the  "I will upload my own picture" button when you select the "browse" button.

Just to be sure I've got the right sequence I've also tried selecting the "I will upload my own picture" button and then clicked the "browse" button.  The avatar jpg is on my C drive, 65 x 65 pixels and 29 kb.

I've also logged out, rebooted my computer, logged back in and tried again... no joy.

Is there an intermediate step where the jpg file actually uploads to the website before you click the "change my profile" button?  Perhaps Windows 7 is stopping the website from uploading the file from my hard drive?

Maybe the forum is not hosting avatars anymore - only hot links?

Yes my computer is plugged in.
