I have a feeling that this is one of those discussions where we'll to agree to disagree.  ::)

I belong to a music gear forum too and this debate comes up every once in awhile.  It's always a stalemate.  Best to agree to disagree now.   :D  Cheers!

What is it? I can only read New York.

Another question:

I played on a Marshall Plexi with a variac for years when I was a kid.

Why did you use a VARIAC or maybe your definition of that is different than mine?

After owning it for 12 years, I decided to sell my '74 Marshall JMP 50-watt head last year.  I don't tour anymore and don't have a trailer to haul it around in.  I barely even played it for the past several years.  I started favoring 1x12 combo amps instead.

Here she is (was) in all her glory though:

Yep...

That is exactly why I went with a single 12" amp...

Since I am not playing out  the 4x12 and the 100 watt seem overkill

The neck on that guitar was given to me by the ESP rep in NYC... It is from ESP's custom shop "48th Street Custom Guitars"..

The body is an ESP body too that I honestly do not remember where I got.

I would use a VariAC to bring the Electrical current that I plugged the amp into down to roughly 88-89 volts. This allowed me to let the plexi sing at lower volumes.

It was a practice that has been done by many guitar players throughout the years

Van Halen's classic BROWN SOUND is a fine example of a PLEXI that is Variac'd

I've never heard of doing that, but at least we agree on what variac is.

Variac is just the trade name for a voltage attenuator, right?  Variacs would include the THD Hot Plate, the Dr. Z. Airbrake, the Weber MASS, the Bad Cat Leash, and various others, right?

You got me there. I've never heard of any of that stuff, but a variac has always been a device to control AC voltage, in my world. It's basically a variable auto transformer.

maybe... But those are top dollar... You can just buy a standard ugly variac usually cheaper...

Why are my first posts on this forum all pictures , I promise to write every so often ... ::)

Music and brewing for me are really related, I owned a small studio up unitl about 6 years ago, after a late night on Ebay , I thought I would list all my studio gear for sale, so after about 4 hours of listing I added about 40% over what I thought it was worth....hoping to not really sell , but put a buy it now price up, and a high reserve, exhausted , I went to bed and didn't check my email for most of the next day . Well, turns out that some guy from LA, bought the high priced stuff BIN and paid instantly. It took me almost 3 weeks to ship everything. I just guessed on the shipping costs ( I listed it for $1,800 for shipping alone ).and in the end, it cost me just over $2,000,,,,lot's of fragile gear, but my price was so good I didn't care  . All of a sudden I had play money , it wasn't a week after the sale was completed, that  I stumbled into a newly opened Homebrew store to buy a birthday gift for a fellow beer loving friend . After about 2 hours in the store, I came home with my first starter kit and beer equipment ....the rest is just a blur ....

I still have 8 or 9 guitars and some non-studio stuff, but here's a few pictures of the HammerSmith Studio's , before it became HammerSmith Ales ...

Guitars:

Studio:

Current setup, A 1967 Bandmaster , some homebrewed cabinets w/ d130 JBL's and Jensen P12N , I play mostly jazz inspired rock and roll type / I hate the phrase Jam band , but ,call it that if you will ---improv stuff .No I don't like Phish or Widespread panic ,and  yes I have been a long time deadboy ( sorry Denny ) , but I am also a free thinker who is inspired by Indian, Folk, Middle Eastern, and funk .
