Ready for the cask aging experiment!
« on: July 12, 2019, 11:04:28 am »
Ok, I recently purchased several of the used BALCONES pin casks. 2 were used for rye, and 1 was used for bourbon. This morning, I sanded off the BALCONES branding, and the handwritten notes on the other head. Then bored a 1" hole in the head, and added a #5.5 drilled silicone stopper and a small gravity tap. I then built a nice dovetailed rack to hold all 3 casks. Wish I knew how to post a pic, it really looks sweet. Filled all 3 casks with water, and no leaks are evident at this point.

So, my favorite brews are RIS, Scotch ales, and barleywines (all high gravity, of course!). I think the RIS and Scotch ales are a no brainer, but I'm curious if anybody has tried a pale barleywine in one of these casks?

Lay some wisdom on me people!

Not yet ;D. I currently have 2 empty barrels, the plan is pale barleywine in one and wee heavy in the other before Sept.

I spent most of my money on beer, tools and guns, the rest I foolishly squandered on stupid stuff!
