Amarillo Hops
« on: July 30, 2019, 08:48:04 pm »
Brewed a west coast brown ale. Same recipe as my red ale (favorite of all beers I create) but this time used more chocolate so it's more brown. Magnum at 60 but the late additions are all Amarillo.

Anyways, Amarillo tastes so good. That's all I have to say.
Generally you don't see that kind of behavior in a major appliance.

I'm so old, I remember when Amarillo was the shiny new toy.

I have not brewed a brown ale since I started brewing 4 years ago. What is a west coast brown?  Can you share some recipe details?  Sounds like something I would like to try to mix things up.

West coast brown, just what I'm calling it.

5lbs German Munich
7.5 Marris
.5 chocolate
.5 crystal 40
.75 carapils

1 oz magnum @60
.75 amarillo @ 10
1 amarillo @ whirlpool
2.5 amarillo @ dry hop

Used two packs of 05 yeast and fermented at lower temps near 60-62. Then after a week let it go to 70.

After ferm used gelatin to get it crystal clear, and the carapils gives it a nice white head -- it's striking in appearance.

used regular old filtered tap water for this one adjusting pH. In my water added 1.8g gypsum. Mashed on the lower end @150.

Awesome - looks like a well balanced recipe.  Will give it a try later this year.  Thank you!

I make an IPA called "Amarillo's Revenge" that has Centennial for bittering but everything else, FWH, Flavor, Aroma, and Dry Hop are all Amarillo.  It's my wife's favorite beer!
Love the orange note Amarillo imparts to the beer.

I have a APA with Centennial, Amarillo and a little Willamette thrown in, it's my peeps favorite. I also love the song "Amarillo by morning"
Amarillo by morning ,up from San Antone, everything that I got is just what I got on. I'll be looking for eight when they pull that gate and I hope that judge ain't blind...……… I ain't got a dime but what I got is mine I ain't rich but Lord I'm free. Amarillo by morning is where I'll be.

I notice that the single supplier of Amarillo hops is marketing very hard in the brewing magazines. I'm sure that the proliferation of other hop varieties has put a serious dent in their sales. That's OK by me since I'd much rather use Amarillo than the new hops.

I've given up on growing my own hops; the only way that I'd change my mind is if amarillo rhizomes became available.

Last night I had a Founders all day ipa with simcoe/amarillo and was reminded just how much I like that combo.
