Oktober SL1 Canner
« on: August 19, 2019, 08:48:16 pm »
Hello All,

I have just recently acquired an Oktober SL1 can seamer. We usually bottle but we feel our NEIPAs don't have a long self life in bottles, as to be expected. With this seamer we are hoping to be able to stretch that longevity just a little longer.

Any suggestions or tips to help us with the new canner? Sorry I posted in bottles and kegs, I didnt see anything for canning.

Cheers,
      Keith

All else being equal, you should expect to see reduced shelf life in cans vs. bottles simply due to the larger surface area. At a minimum, if your filler doesn't do a CO2 blanket, I'd figure out a way to rig something up.

If you are bottling or canning carbonated beer from a keg, and your filling process is essentially the same (i.e. chilling the bottles or cans first, and purging the can or bottle with CO2 first), I would expect longer shelf life from cans if you seal the can on foam.  The sealed cans shouldn't allow the same O2 ingress that crown caps apparently do allow over time. (I don't have a canner but would love for our club to acquire one.)
