Hey now, some of us love bagpipes, I don't think I'd want front row seats to someone just learning to play them though.

Exactly!

I remember when my friend's 7 year old daughter was learning to play the violin, I was very grateful it wasn't my kid.
I spent most of my money on beer, tools and guns, the rest I foolishly squandered on stupid stuff!

I have been enjoying learning the Uke. I have discovered the circle of fifths and realized I can play a bazillion songs with very few chords:

I–V–vi–IV, C–G–Am–F
V–vi–IV–I, G–Am–F–C
vi–IV–I–V, Am–F–C–G
IV–I–V–vi, F–C–G–Am

Amazing how many songs use those four chords.

I'd like to submit the mandolin-twice the strings, twice as good. Also, the strings are in the right order (Low to high). And you still get the benefit of holding an instrument that looks too small to be for an adult.

I played the mandolin for many years.  Like playing bass backwards!
