Spunding Valve Metal?
« on: August 26, 2022, 08:31:45 pm »
Does it matter the composition of the metal parts in a Spunding valve?

Guess I'm overly anal about ONLY using stainless in my brewery.

What about a Spunding valve? If I can only find a part in brass does it matter? I'd believe no as none of the beer is coming into contact with the Spunding valve part, but I thought I'd ask the experts.

Thanks.

I have a few brass valves in my brewery — all are upstream from the BC — and they all work flawlessly with no issues.

I know this doesn't answer your question, but if you are in the market for a spunding valve these are worth checking out.

Brass is generally more antimicrobial than stainless because of the copper.

I'm more worried about the lead. Also, brass is a soft metal (meaning easy to over tighten and damage).

Morebeer has an all stainless steel spunding valve that fits on a ball valve QD so the SS parts must be out there. There are also all plastic spunding valves if you are comfortable with that. There are DIY plans for those floating around.

I have made DIY spunding valves using brass parts with no problems. You just have to clean them in a solution first.

If it doesn't touch the beer, what is the problem?
