i basically never seek out video reviews of beer, or even really pay attention to individual beer reviews, but when i do come across them, they are unbelievably pathetic.

the stuff that comes out of people who've never done the brewing process is just nonsense or regurgitating stuff they think they've heard "experts" say. they spend half the time analyzing things irrelevant to the beer (the label, their perception of the origin of the beer, the name) and hold up the glass to the light and actually weight the precise colour as some determinant factor.

the less they know, the more mannerisms and ways of speaking they try to force like they are some experts.

i watched a bunch of these guys' videos, just skipped through this one to hear dumb stuff.

I'd say that this is the kind of stuff satire it built on. Lots of folks enjoy beer - that's good news - some know not much but want to have a voice, some know a little, and probably yes those who have learned how to brew and devoted time to really delving into the art/craft of brewing have the most to say that can hold water (or beer) and be considered to have real expertise. Maybe not quite in the same vein but along these line perhaps is the irritation I can't help but feel with wait staff who want to be able to recommend a beer to a customer or provide information about beers on the menu but clearly have not been educated on beers and are going off misinformation or lack of knowledge on the product they're serving while trying to be helpful. I have to remind myself that they are not necessarily to blame and I should probably hold my tongue - acting the know-it-all may boost my ego but bruise someone else's. I do appreciate beer-oriented establishments who have put effort into getting staff Cicerone trained or have obviously focused on staff education.

very nice, can says "coffee" on it, guy starts blabbing about coffee. if the can said "dark rye bread, toast" etc whatever, he'd go on about that.

all the fancy "tasting" glasses because they see others doing this.

just follower culture completely

i guess a point is, that i can't really respect someone's opinion as a beer reviewer/rater unless they are at least very aware of the many different processes of making different beers and alcohol. i had friends who i'd discuss commercial beers with and their merits for a long time, but once i had several years of brewing under my belt and they hadn't done it, it was just obvious how limited their understanding of the qualities of a beer were.

the LCBO, the massive government corporation that runs liquor, beer and wine in ontario still confuses sake and shochu, describing shochu as "fermented" or "rice wine" etc for example. people talk without even knowing what theyre saying most of the time.

this is one of the problems of the internet... EVERYONE has a voice, regardless of how stupid they may be. sometimes it's entertaining, most of the time its not...

I for sure believe that the more time I've spent homebrewing the more I feel I can speak about beer with some authority or depth of knowledge. Also, I think that devoting time to learning about beer generally, not just brewing skills and brewing science, has made me a better brewer and more able to appreciate beers and speak to others about them. Several years in at this point as a brewer, I've come to appreciate that there's a lot of information pertaining to beer and brewing that gets taken without questioning and repeated as "fact" when it's untrue, only partially true, or has to be taken in a specific context.

More generally, I continue to be confused by Youtube as a delivery mechanism for educational content. I can read ahead in an article, skipping sections I already know, so it's much faster and no one exhorts me to "Smash that like button!". /rant

I'm for sure aware that 99.99% of the world isn't nearly as interested as me in beer. If I'm not careful I open my mouth and people's eyes glaze over because I'm talking about beer again

Same with me.  But I wonder often if we brewers think beer is a bigger deal, a more important subject, than it really deserves to be.
