What are people doing to get their beer evaluated?
« on: August 04, 2020, 11:42:57 am »
Hey Everyone, it's John with your AHA. How're we all doing?

This will surely cause some debate, but I'm curious to know.

I'm looking to gather some testimony and feedback on what everyone's doing in a year where so many of us have time to brew but many competitions have either been canceled or postponed until further notice.

I found this thread which sparked my interest in bringing up some ideas again: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=25104.0

If competitions in your area are canceled or postponed until sometime next year, would you pay to have your beer evaluated by a panel of judges and get full written feedback, just not in a competition?
I'd imagine the judging panel would need to comprise of at least 3 judges with a ranking of Grand Master or above. Open to discussion.

What if you had to ship the beer instead of dropping it off somewhere locally? Point noted that there are already inherent worries about shipping that plague this idea but interested to hear people's thoughts.

Would you use such a program?

Be well, take good care of yourself, and thank you

I would pay a reasonable cost, but not sure what most would consider a reasonable amount.  I'm retired and my income is not affected by the virus.  I have been donating a modest amount to a couple of local charities to try to help those who need it.
It's easier to read brewing books and get information from the forum than to sacrifice virgins to appease the brewing gods when bad beer happens!

It would depend somewhat on the cost, but much more important would be the qualifications of the judges.

Our homebrew club has a cooler on a porch where you take one, leave one.  Feed back is given via a Slack channel.
Some day we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny

I primarily submit my beer into a competition.  Usually cost is < $20 an entry.  Most of the time I get quality feedback from the judges notes that I will incorporate into my next beer.

My brew club also has a few BJCP judges, and REALLY good brewers to boot, that are always willing to give out constructive criticism.  This is free beyond giving them some of my beer.

That is something that I would be willing to pay for.

It kills a bit of the free-wheeling, do it my way spirit of home brewing but it would be a valuable option to those of us that want to make a beer that does more than just make our friends happy.

If you're serious about making an objectively high level good/ great/ superior beer you need objective high level feedback. Not everyone is lucky enough to find that in a local club. The more qualified the evaluator, the more it would be worth.

I just pass it out to folks at work.  Only one guy (a mead brewer) is the only one that gives me feedback.

No for me, but would be willing to join a club which typically does monthly beer comps/evaluations. With competitions back on track this year, i have entered a couple.
