I don’t do FWH because I like to skim the foam in the beginning of the boil.
This is a side discussion but I also skim when the protein forms on the top of the wort in the kettle.  But when I FWH, I don't skim because I would be removing hops too.  The FWH beers I make come out exactly like the beers where I skim so that alone should tell me that skimming is not necessary.  And yet I do it.  Is it boredom?  Waiting in the garage for the boil to start and you think, "I guess I'll skim this schputz off the top of the wort.  Seems reasonable!".  There is no downside to leaving it there, as far as I can tell.

On the calculation:  This conversation is enough for me to say that a FWH addition is 'close' to a boil addition at the start of the boil.  10% in either direction works for me and once a recipe is established with some tasting notes, etc. the calculation is pretty secondary anyway.  Thanks and cheers guys.

A day without beer is like... just kidding, I have no idea.

FWIW, I typically skim, but if I see some green color, I will stir it in and then skim when all is tan or without the green.  However, I use stainless mesh canisters or a hop spider stainless mesh thingy to contain the hops somewhat.  That alone may be affecting the calculators, hence my seat of the pants ultimate hop use determination.  I am less than scientific on hop measurement, since I am typically very low on the IBU's anyway and as I understand it, the IBU measurements may have been very "testing equipment dependent" in their original development...

If you use the Tinseth scale, accuracy is dependent on using the same equipment he did, the same chilling time, using whole hops, not pellets....
