I grew up on a farm (18 years - cradle to college) and I can honestly say naming our food never made it taste different.  We had milk cows, stock cows, cattle, hogs, sheep, ducks, chickens and other various experiments.  You've never tasted better hamburger than that made from an old milk cow.

It didn't sit well with my (future) wife when she came out for supper one night and asked "where's that lamb that always follows you around?" and my answer was "Oh, Charlemagne, he's on the grill.".  She got over it.   :)

I understand people's squeamishness but really, it's raised to be food, there's no other reason to feed livestock if it isn't going to be eaten by someone.  Every animal has a personality but if farmers let that get to them we'd starve.

Free range livestock isn't sustainable unless we make serious changes to our diet.  It would mean no 16 oz. sirloins or big juicy burgers.  We'd all be healthier but I don't see it happening.  Here in the mid-west we produce so much corn that it isn't worth what it costs to raise it and we can't eat it.  We have so much that we invented an idiotic fuel production system to try and use it and then the government subsidized it.  We used to raise crops besides corn and soybeans but we don't anymore due to the demand for meat products.

We can feed the world off the farm land in the USA, we just can't do it and raise so much meat at the same time.  As a T-shirt I saw at the State Fair said "Put down the Pork Chop on a Stick and move to the salad bar".

Sorry for the rant.

All good points, Paul.  We actually use more land for feed for animals than we do for fruits and vegetables and grain for human consumption.

You know I won't, Ron. (Now where is that lip-smackin' emoticon?) ;D

I'll be in line for the brisket.  Farm boys don't go vegetarian (unless forced to do so).

Sorry about the rant.  Even after not living on a farm for 30 years it's still one of my buttons that is way too easily pushed.   :)

How did this thread become serious anyway?

What is really cruel is eating PLANTS.  They don't have a chance at all.  They are rooted to the ground & can't get away.  If we humans were at all sensitive, we'd stick to eating animals.  If they don't want to be eaten they at least can attempt to resist.

(How did this thread get so serious!)

Indians, more specifically Hindus; dont eat meat. Because their belief is that killing of any kind is wrong.

Im not a vegetarian but sometime I wonder.

I have dogs and they bring me alot of joy.  I also have cats.  Yes...I am animal lover.

So this issue is a very difficult one for me to handle sometimes.

Cap....I can definitely relate.

I can definitely relate as well, for the same reasons Ron mentioned.  My wife is a vegetarian.  I eat her meals occasionally - it ain't so bad, but there are sometimes these cravings that a red bean quesadilla is not going to satiate.

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?  We might, if they screamed all the time for no good reason.

Sorry slowbrew, just thought I would tell a little story in one of these goofy threads. Ya know make things a little interesting in the pub with a debatable subject.

Im not arguing for or against meat consumption. Just not always sure it is right for me. Dont know if will ever stop doing it but I might not ever stop thinking about it either.

Americans are so detached from their food. Most people dont even have a clue.

Ill hunt, eat meat and all that, but the ground hogs in my back yard eat out of my hands.

Its cool though, pretty soon they will be able to grow just the leg without the lamb.

Ever read The Jungle? Thats an interesting book.

Check out this movie if you ever get a chance, it is almost surreal.

1.  how did this thread go from mindless rambling and licking toads to all this.
2.  sorry cap. i think the jungle by (upton siclair i think) absolutely sucked.  right up there with the communist manifesto. both of which i was forced to read,  though the image of the chicago meat industry is utterly disgusting.
3.  and now that i think about it, less animals more barely hmmm. i think i will go back to licking toads.

I'm totality against abusing animals but I did grow up on a farm killing hogs and rabbits and such. There is a right way to do things. I do love me some pork ribs.

My ancestors did not scratch and climb their way to the top of the food chain just so I can eat a carrot.
