Water chemistry

I am calculating the result of boiling water using the formula: Ending Ca (ppm) = Starting Ca (ppm) - ((starting HCO3 (ppm) - ending HCO3 (ppm))/3.05) Can anyone tell me what the 3.05 is?

Possibly a conversion for magnesium, since everything else in the calculation assumes only calcium.

Hi dmtaylor, I know its not Magnesium, I Think it might be a Molarity conversion or Atomic weight but not sure, still trying to find out. Thanks though

It is the molar equivalence ratio between the EQ weight of the HCO3- ion and the Ca++ ion.
MW HCO3- = 61.01684
EQ_WT HCO3- = 61.01684
MW Ca++ = 40.078
EQ_WT Ca++ = 20.039
61.01684/20.039 = 3.044904436 (the correct value)
Or when simplified: 61/20 = 3.05 (the simple value)
