Grain basket recommendations needed
« on: January 31, 2021, 09:00:48 am »
My brew pot has an inside diameter of 12” and and inside depth of 12”. I would like to get a grain basket for it that is suitable for mashing. I also want to get hooks for it so I can suspend the basket inside the pot and drain it and perhaps sparge through it.

Looking for recommendations where I can purchase this. Thanks in advance!

One cannot sparge through a basket.   Sparging requires a solid column with a perforated bottom to force the liquid to flow through the entire mash bed.  If you want to sparge, you should look at a two or three vessel configuration that uses coolers if you are on a budget.  That being said, you can do full volume mashes if your kettle is large enough.  A 12" tall kettle with a 12" diameter is not large enough for 5-gallon all-grain brewing.   It holds less than 6 gallons of liquid.  You need at least a 10-gallon kettle for 5-gallon batches.

Here is where you can get a custom basket: https://www.utahbiodieselsupply.com/brewingfilters.php#biab

I should have mentioned this in my original post: I primarily do 1 gallon batches. So the pot size has not been an issue. I’ll check out the link.

Can I ask what your goal is with adding the basket vs. just using a grain bag?

I do primarily one gallon biab in a similarly sized pot, and with a good pair of insulated rubber gloves, I've never missed having a basket.
