WLP033 Klassic Ale Yeast Pre-order
« on: February 20, 2021, 01:47:10 PM »
Some of us have pre ordered this yeast at White Labs. It’s a special order yeast that they propagate when they get 150 orders and currently there are only a handful of orders so I am encouraging those who like English ales to pre order and spread the word. Mark (saccharomyces) says this yeast is essentially a strain that was his favorite and he describes it in a thread I will link to.
Here is the link to order the yeast: https://yeastman.com/_store?action=storeMain
The site is not good and it’s easy to end up on the pro page where it looks like an astronomical price. You need to click “yeast strains” then go to the top and hit the “ vault” button.
Those of you on other forums, social media groups, or who have their own websites would be doing us a big favor if you spread this info.
Mark’s description is reply #23 here: https://www.homebrewersassociation.org/forum/index.php?topic=36488.15
Thanks!

I'm interested, didn't sign up yet but I probably will.  If I am going to order a vault strain, I might as well look at everything in the vault and order a whole bunch.  This is a good reminder, as I've been meaning to do this.  When I have more time I will look through these and order several.

Many of the Vault strains are periodically released as seasonal strains.  However, I have never seen WLP033 released as a seasonal.  The only way to obtain WLP033 is to pre-order it and hope that the count gets close enough to the pre-order propagation count of 150.  I remember the last time that White Labs propagated.  If I recall correctly, I placed my pre-order in 2015 and White Labs did not propagate it until 2017 when I was on a brewing hiatus.  If we are going to reach the propagation pre-order count any time in the near future, we are going to need to promote this culture in a big way, maybe via a virtual "big brew."  It works best with beers around 1.052 or smaller.  I would not call WLP033 an AIPA or APA yeast. For those looking for a squeaky-clean American ale fermentation profile, WLP033 is not your yeast culture.

I'm thinking brown ale, a Landlord-ish bitter, and maybe finish off with a barleywine on the yeast cake from the bitter. I have some Golden Promise and Celeia on order as we speak, and they will definitely be playing a starring role in these beers (provided that I haven't used them all before the yeast is released).

By "big brew," I meant what happens at Maryland Homebrew (MDHB) every year.  A large number of brewers get together out in back of the store and brew outside.  A virtual big brew in this case would be a brew where a large number of brewers agree to brew within a style with same yeast culture. English-style pale ale and bitter were common on the East Coast during the first craft brewing bubble in the nineties due to the influence of the Alan Pugsley-installed Peter Austin and Partners systems with Geary's in Maine being the first.  Dogfish Head was heavily influenced by the Wild Goose Brewery, which was in Cambridge, Maryland on Maryland's Eastern Shore.  There is little doubt in my mind that "Doggie" descends from the Ringwood culture used at Wild Goose.

Just submitted my preorder. There are now 5 of 150 needed. We may need a little help.  ;)

The number should be higher than five.  Who other than me and Roger placed an order for WLP033? I believe that someone stated that he/she placed an order for two packs.  That leaves only one other person.

The yeastman site is only showing 4 pre-orders, so some people may have not completed checking out.

I wonder if they just didn't update, considering how wonky the website is

I'm going to put in a pre-order, but haven't yet.

I'd shot a question to their customer service and just got the response back.
