Nugget/Amarillo hop combo
« on: September 08, 2010, 09:50:32 pm »
Any thoughts on this combo for an american amber?  I've got the malts down (and not really looking to change them):
80% Maris Otter
15% Honey Malt
5% Crystal 60
a touch of choc wheat

what I used the first time for this beer:
.5oz nugget 60min
.5oz hallertau 40min
.5oz riwaka 30min
1.5oz riwaka 1min
.5oz amarillo dry
.5oz simcoe dry
.25oz perle dry
.33oz sterling dry

my buddy is not quite the hop lover I am and am thinking of this:
.5oz nugget 60min
.5oz amarillo 15min
.5oz nugget 0min
.5oz amarillo 0min

5gal batch

Opinions?  I had also thought of northern brewer or willamette, but I like nugget and I like amarillo and think the combo would be nice.  Anyone tried the nugget/amarillo combo?

Nugget is a fine bittering hop, but it can be slightly rough as an aroma/finishing. That being stated, I don't think a 1/2 oz. will affect the outcome much. Personally, I'd either just use the Amarillo or add some Willamette in place of the Nugget. Just my 2-cents!  ;)

Yeah I should have mentioned/asked if anyone had experience using nugget as a finishing hop.

I've used willamette and northern brewer as finishers, just thought of trying something else.  Was trying for a spicy/floral & citrusy combo.  Perhaps EKG?  Not very american there...

How about a Mt. Hood/Amarillo combo for finishing?  Might get you what you're looking for.

I just bottled an IPA with nugget at 60 min boil and amarillo at 20 min, as well as an oz of amarillo dry hopped.  Aroma was wonderful when I was bottling.  Will let you know how it turned out in a couple weeks.
Primary: gotlandsdricke/alt/dunkel hybrid
Secondary: pale barleywine,
Bottled:  Gotlandsdricke
               Oatmeal/blackberry stout
               Honey Kolsch

Just saw this, Thanks.  I'll look forward to hearing about it.
Not sure when I'll get to brew this, but it's next on my list.  Just gotta find some time.  Finally cleared some fermenters so I've got the space...

I think it's a great combo.  I brewed 10 gals. of an IPA that was a combo of Nugget, Bullion and Amarillo and loved the results.  Killed one keg and have another in line.  I plan to enter it in a couple of upcoming competitions.  Recipe linky: http://www.homebrewchatter.com/board/showthread.php?11351-Gold-Nugget-Bullion-IPA

thanks for the input.  some space cleared up so I'm gonna get the ingredients tonight and brew it tomorrow after work.
I think I will try my initial thought:
.5oz nugget 60min
.5oz amarillo 15min
.5oz nugget 0min
.5oz amarillo 0min

never know if you don't just brew it and try.
