INFORMATION LETTER
For a Research Study Entitled:

"Craft Breweries' Environmental Proactivity: Do Consumers Care?"

The purpose of this study is to examine how consumers see and value different environmentally friendly practices used by craft brewers in the U.S. In addition, the study looks at how the adoption of these practices impact customer behavior, such as how often they frequent craft breweries and how much they are willing to pay for craft beer produced in an environmentally friendly way. The study is being conducted by Drs. Imran Rahman, Clark Danderson, and Mark Traynor with the Auburn University Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management. You were selected as a possible participant because you are a consumer in the United States who may be able to offer valuable information on this key issue. Additionally, you are an adult, aged 21 and above.

What will be involved if you participate? Your participation is completely voluntary. Your responses are completely anonymous. If you decide to participate, you will be asked a question on whether you consent to the study. If you do not consent, you will not be eligible to participate in the study. If you consent, you will be brought to an electronic survey administered through Qualtrics. The survey will take approximately 20-25 minutes of your time to complete.

Are there any risks or discomforts? There are no foreseeable risks or discomforts associated with participating in this study. You will not directly benefit from this study either. Some general benefits of the study are that it will provide information on environmental practices in craft breweries and how consumers view them. Such information can help craft brewers prioritize the adoption of these practices and inform them on practices that can be marketed to their customer base. It will also inform craft brewers on how to price beers produced using environmentally friendly practices.

Also, to thank you for your time, you will be given the optional benefit of taking part in a raffle for a chance to win one (1) of four (4) $50 or one (1) of ten (10) $20 store credit at www.amazon.com. At the end of the survey, you will be provided with an optional text box where you can enter your personal email address. Once the survey period has been completed those surveys with email addresses will be numbered sequentially based on when the survey was completed. A random number generator will then be used to pick 10 winners. Those winners will have links to their $50 or $20 store credit emailed to them by Dr. Rahman.

There are numerous questions in the survey designed to ensure that you are paying attention to the questions being asked. If you do not answer all of the attention check questions correctly the survey will re-direct to the end and you will not be given the opportunity for compensation. If you change your mind about participating, you can withdraw at any time in advance of the interview or by exiting the unfinished survey. If you choose to withdraw, your data cannot be withdrawn as it is unidentifiable. Your decision about whether or not to participate or to stop participating will not jeopardize your future relations with Auburn University, the Horst Schulze School of Hospitality Management, or the College of Human Sciences. Any data obtained in connection with this study will remain anonymous. We will protect your privacy and the data you provide by ensuring that only the researchers listed below will have access to it. Information collected through your participation may be used to fulfill an educational requirement, published in a professional journal, and/or presented at a professional meeting.

If you have questions about this study, please contact Dr. Imran Rahman at izr0004@auburn.edu. If you have questions about your rights as a research participant, you may contact the Auburn University Office of Research Compliance or the Institutional Review Board by phone (334) 844-5966 or e-mail at IRBadmin@aubum.edu or IRBChair@aubum.edu.

HAVING READ THE INFORMATION ABOVE, YOU MUST DECIDE IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS RESEARCH PROJECT. IF YOU DECIDE TO PARTICIPATE, YOU WILL BE ASKED A CONSENT QUESTION AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SURVEY, TO WHICH YOU MUST RESPOND, “I CONSENT.”

Sincerely,
Dr. Imran RAHMAN
Dr. Clark DANDERSON
Dr. Mark TRAYNOR
