I thought Affliction was a proper noun.  ;)

You wouldn't say to a bartender "I'd like four beer".  Well, I guess you might and you'd get what you wanted, but she might look at you funny.  :)

Ah yes the quantifier! Since you're (not your) adding an amount it's okay to add the s.  Yes, yes.

So then if someone says "let's go get some beers" you can assume you're each getting more than one.  Because if they say "let's go get a beer" you don't think you're going to split one, do you? :)

I read that wrong the first time I saw it.  I thought it said "Afflecktion"  which would be being forced to watch Ben Affleck movies all the time and that would just be cruel.

The one that's been killing me lately is the new sense that "anymore" seems to be taking. Anymore, people use it to mean something like "nowadays".

That, and a verb construction that I've only heard in Indiana, and which is incredibly common here: [noun] needs [past participle]. As in, "My car needs cleaned." Doing it without the passive voice ("to be") just sounds incredibly wrong to me.

(Sorry I didn't get this in before the thread was re-dedicated to poop jokes.)

I was chastised at work for copy correcting some web content that was missing the "to be." When in Rome, I suppose...

Not just Indiana.  I hear it in Ohio too.  Typically from people who also insist that our nation's capital is "Warshington."

Don't forget all the the people who need to get some AA battrees.

Dad always said it that way.  It drove SWMBO nuts.  To really set her off some days the kids (ya, the kids, that's it) will ask something like "did someone warsh this sweater with a set of battrees in the pocket?".  It's good for 30 minutes or so of ranting.   ;D

I dated a girl in college who used to say that - she was from Eastern PA, near Allentown.  More Pennsylvania Dutch country than Philly-style.

The one that bugs me is "anyways" instead of just saying "anyway".  Seriously annoying.

I met a guy in Yreka once who referred to AAA, what everyone else I've ever met called Triple-A, as AAA, saying each letter like he was saying FBI.  Strange guy.  Replaced my transmission in less than a day though, so that was good.

Funny that this topic was started by a guy who said this (my emphasis):

I've always thought that it did add a slight honey taste to the beer, but I really wonder how much of that is psychological.  I've done enough study of how preconceptions effect perception to be skeptical of my own tastings when it isn't done blind.  And I haven't done that with honey malt.

Maybe they need to change that pie chart to include audio post production types . . .  ;D

I was an English major in college, and that's one I still get wrong almost every time!
I grew up in a German town full of Meiers (Kohlmeiers, Sultemeiers, and plain old Meiers) and Steins, etc.  I still can't do the "I before E" thing correctly.  Damn Germans.  I'm an English major, too, and my teachers couldn't understand why I got it confused.

I don't know if this a joke or not, but at one time I heard that the most frequently cited reason for murder in Texas was "needed killing."

Add to the list people who say "I could care less" when they really mean "I couldn't care less."

OK, this is a joke.  Guy walks into a pharmacy and asks "got anything for a headache?" Pharmacist thinks a minute and hands him a bottle of something.  After the guy leaves, the pharmacist says to a colleague, "I wonder if he meant to ask if I had anything to get rid of a headache?"

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/anyways

I've had this discussion before, maybe not here. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong about "anyways," or for that matter, "anywise." It's that the modern usage is typically incorrect. Although it's interesting to note that it's been thusly abused for an absurdly long time. Which really makes you wonder about just how elastic language should be if we've been collectively using a word "incorrectly" for centuries.

Interesting write-up here if you're interested in stuffy grammarian foofaraw: http://maddy06.blogspot.com/2007/03/anyways.html
