That is...something.

By comparison The Complete Joy of Homebrewing is highly technical despite it's casual attitude.

Scoff if you will, but the Sister Star of the Sun IPA recipe is still better than around 90% of the IPAs I have tried, commercial or homebrewed, over the years.

I agree.  That's a classic and has stood the test of time.

Interesting recipe. When did people start whirlpool hopping?

In Fermentation Technology by Ray Medina, on page 78 it says the whirlpool was developed in brewing by Henry Ranulpf Hudston in 1960 when he worked for Molsen.  It is based on the tea leaf paradox observed by Einstein.

Can’t find a reference to when hops were added. Mitch Steele, formerly of Stone Brewing Company, has been one of the foremost experts on this technique, and has discussed it in numerous forums, including his book, IPA: Brewing Techniques, Recipes and the Evolution of India Pale Ale, presentations at the National Homebrewers Conference and in an article in the November/December 2013 edition of Zymurgy magazine.

+1 on the SSoS. Good stuff. As I remember it there were a LOT of "I haven't brewed this yet but it should be good...". anyway, thanks for the trip down memory lane!
oops
I meant to do that

Interesting recipe. When did people start whirlpool hopping?

In the homebrew world, maybe 10 years ago.

I'm surprised it didn't catch on sooner if Glenn was doing it in the early 90s.

Edit: sorry, found the recipe on realbeer.com and it was Dave Brockington.

Interesting recipe. When did people start whirlpool hopping?

from  the sister of the sun recipe instructions
" The finishing hop has been doubled, and I now add that while chilling -- I do not boil the hop at that stage. "

sounds like this person stumbled across a form of whirlpool hopping

after looking at the sister of the sun IPA recipe, I am now convinced more than ever that hot side chinook hopping makes an amazing IPA

That's been around since before I started brewing and it's called a flameout addition.  You put it in and let it sit.  You didn't whirlpool.

Who said it didn't?  ;)  I also love it for dry hopping.
