Gelatin Finings While Force Carbing??
« on: October 15, 2021, 02:08:52 am »
Hi!

As the subject line suggest, can I use gelatin finings to clear my beer at the same time force carbonate in a corny keg?  Just a random thought and thinking about doing it.  But I need some perspective before I potentially ruin a perfectly good beer.  Any thoughts?

Thanks, y'all!

Yes. One has no effect on the other.

I force carb and cold crash simultaneously. I wouldn’t hesitate to add gelatin after chilling the beer under CO2 pressure.

I add gelatin in the keg when the beer is cold and then carbonate the beer for about 5-6 days.

I know it's possible to fine in the keg and toss a glass or 2 when kegged (dumping the sediment).

However, I've found the following works best for me. Cold crash, fine with plain gelatin and then keg (and carbonate). I have to toss maybe a few ounces when the keg is tapped.

I agree that cold processes would probably be best in the fermenter but I am fermenting in a fridge I bought 30 yrs ago used. It would struggle to get to cold crash temps but does great managing 65 +/- 2* F.

I have a 15 yr old side-by-side that I use to cold crash in (freezer side) and serve from (fridge side). My fermenter won’t fit in the freezer side. The freezer fits one keg nicely and the fridge fits two tapped kegs side-by-side.

So… I adapted my processes to work with what I have which means I transfer to keg prior to cold crash.

Am I understanding correctly? Fridge is only able to get to 65F? Is this correct?

Normal fridge temp is 37F

It sits comfortably at 65*F. Makes a great fermentation chamber. It’ll get colder but I don’t like to push that old girl.
